Originally inspired by all those ultra-functional objects around us that we ignore, such as traffic lights, road signs and airport runway lights. These items are invisible to most, but are often genius, engineering designs that have a simplicity, a purity and a humbleness.

The RNWY01 (Runway01) lamp is constructed with manufacturing off-cuts from local factories. We use Swedish pine that is often (but not always) finger-jointed to give a much more stable and environmentally conscious result. This also gives an added visual aesthetic that we at hemtools find quite beautiful.

The complete wooden lamp structure consists of 2 already partially assembled wooden components that connect with a single screw. There is also a cable grip, and this is a standard component bought from a local supplier that brings back that element of the invisible ultra-functional design.

The cable set (that’s the electric bit) is also manufactured in southern Sweden (along with a couple of Italian components) and connects to the wooden lamp simply by tightening the metal lampholder rings either side of the 4mm plywood component (the lampholder-holder).
