Inspired by old-school laboratory equipment, this functional and simple lamp, is just that! No frills or ego added to this product. Having said that, there is still a lot going-on, that both intentionally challenges and adds to its humble character.

Lab. is a cheeky little chap, and on first glance could be seen as a little over-simple and boring. However, looking closer, Lab. is constructed from subtly different woods and sometimes in opposing grain directions, which intentionally adds a little sense of craftsmanship rebelliousness.

The base, made from repurposed birch-ply waste from a local garage door factory, is raised off the ground by a few mm to give a subtle floating appearance as well as a grounding shadow. In addition, the element that supports the vertical wooden pole, overhangs the baseplate and creates a subtle visual tension.

Another feature Lab. has, is unlike the old-school lab equipment there is no height adjustment, which is actually a non-feature. It could easily have this function, but what’s the point! There would be no lighting/ambience benefit from doing this and so we didn’t see the need to include unnecessary functions. Also, I love how much it challenges those that try to work out how to adjust it.

The lamp comes in 2 main wooden parts that have already been part-assembled and to help construct the lamp, it just needs a single screw under the base to complete it.

The cable-set consists of a simple e27 lampholder at one end and a transparent 2 pin Europlug at the other. In between these elements is a length of beautiful Swedish manufactured woven cable and a transparent very simple on/off switch that makes a great clicking sound as it’s used.
